What experiences in your life have you needed to find courage for?
This was the question explored by refugees who have made their home in Hastings, as part of English conversation classes led by teacher Kathy Briscoe. The responses captured and made into bold posters for Refugee Week 2026, uncover the enormous courage shown by this community on a daily basis.
Everyone needs to be courageous at different times in their lives, and the authors were invited to speak of any life experience, not necessarily that of seeking refuge. The conversations took place over many weeks, between people who knew each other well, and so from a place of trust. The authors steered the direction of the conversation, and the shape and content of the final text for the posters. The authors view their stories as nothing extraordinary, which perhaps for the reader, makes them all the more humbling.
You can see the full set of 11 posters at the Dove Café on Bexhill Road, Bunka at the Observer Building and at Eagle House, as well as on the seafront poster sites during Refugee Week, 15-21 June 2026.
Courage is the theme of Refugee Week 2026, which spotlights the everyday acts of courage that shape our communities. The project was supported by Hastings Community of Sanctuary.
Many thanks to Kathy Briscoe, The Clifton Centre and the De La Warr Pavilion.
