Hastings Supports Refugees & Hastings Community of Sanctuary

Join us for a day of music, food, workshops, wild swimming and more in the beautiful surroundings of Ashburnham Place, near Battle, East Sussex.

The event will formally launch Hastings as a Community of Sanctuary, part of the national movement that holds the vision that the UK will be a welcoming place of safety for all and proud to offer sanctuary to people fleeing violence and persecution.

We aim to bring people together across cultures and communities in a demonstration of hospitality and welcome.

Music – we have an amazing line up with Ian Shaw, Liane Carroll, Sarah Jane Morris, Los Twangeros, Samaki, King Size Slim, Hannah Atkins and more.  Plus spoken word from The Whole Shebang! and special guest John Hegley.

Eating together – everyone is invited to share in a communal picnic. Bring food, bring friends, make new friends.

Activities – the day will be full of activities for all ages with workshops, discussions and children’s activities. We'll be offering the hugely popular tours of the Ashburnham kitchen garden and grounds, and opening up the beautiful lake for wild swimming.

Catering – as well as the communal picnic, we will have food available to buy and a locally run bar.

The event will run from 12noon – 8pm, with a more family focused daytime session (12-4pm) and a music-focused evening session (5-8pm).

Free parking on site.  A shuttle bus is also available from Hastings Warrior Square, tickets £2 each way bookable in advance.

Stay up to date with the programme here or follow the Hastings Supports Refugees Facebook page.

    Can you support us?

The refugee crisis isn’t going away any time soon and we think it’s more important than ever to keep the issue in people’s awareness and to keep raising funds to support the fantastic work being done at home and abroad.

You can help us by getting involved in Picnic by the Lake.

    • Workshop leaders, particularly offering activities for children and families
    • Local organisations that are interested in having a stall at the event
